How Transfers Work in EnvelopeBudget: Two Linked Transactions, Explained
A transfer between your accounts is really two linked transactions — one in each account. Here is how EnvelopeBudget keeps them in sync, auto-matches them on import, and helps you find the missing half with the F key.

How Transfers Work in EnvelopeBudget: Two Linked Transactions, Explained
A common question we get is: "How are transfers handled? Is it one transaction linked to the source and target accounts, or two independent transactions — one in each account?"
The short answer: a transfer is two linked transactions, one in each account. Here's why that matters, how EnvelopeBudget keeps the pair in sync, and how it automatically matches transfers when you import from your bank.
Two Transactions, Not One
When you move money from checking to savings, EnvelopeBudget creates two separate transaction records:
- An outflow in the source account (a negative amount — money leaving checking)
- An inflow in the destination account (a positive amount — money arriving in savings)
Each one lives in its own account's register, and each account's balance moves independently. The source goes down, the destination goes up. The two are linked together with a two-way link, so each transaction knows its counterpart in the other account.
Why Two Instead of One?
Because that's how your bank reports it. Your checking statement shows the money leaving; your savings statement shows the money arriving. By keeping two linked transactions, EnvelopeBudget mirrors exactly what your bank reports — so each account's balance and cleared amount stay correct.
The link between them is what tells the app these are two halves of the same money movement, rather than an expense and an income. That's important: a transfer doesn't touch your envelopes. Money just moves between accounts, so your spending power stays the same.
How the Pair Stays in Sync
Because the two transactions are linked, EnvelopeBudget treats them as one logical movement:
- Editing the amount updates both sides
- Editing the date can update both sides
- Unlinking converts both back to regular transactions and restores their original payee names
- Deleting one typically deletes both (with confirmation)
Both sides are marked as transfers, given a matching payee (like "Transfer" or the account name), and kept in your inbox for review.
Shadow Transfers: When You've Only Seen One Side
Sometimes you convert a single transaction into a transfer before your bank has reported the other side. In that case EnvelopeBudget creates a shadow transaction in the other account.
A shadow is a hidden placeholder — it doesn't appear in your transaction list. It exists so the transfer is properly linked on both sides immediately. When your bank later reports the real transaction in that other account, EnvelopeBudget replaces the shadow with the real imported transaction, preserving the link. You never have to reconcile the two halves by hand.
Automatic Matching on Import
When you sync or import transactions, EnvelopeBudget runs several automatic checks to keep transfers accurate without manual work.
Auto-Linking Expected Transfers
If you've already marked one side of a transfer and your bank later imports the other side, EnvelopeBudget looks for a match:
- Same budget and transfer account
- Opposite amount (one positive, one negative)
- Within a 7-day date window
- No existing transfer link
If there's exactly one unambiguous match, the two are automatically linked as a transfer pair — no manual step needed. If more than one transaction could match, EnvelopeBudget leaves both in your inbox for you to review rather than guessing.
Auto-Merging Duplicates
After a SimpleFIN sync, newly imported transactions are checked against existing ones. If a new import matches an existing transaction on the same account, same amount, and a date within 3 days, they're automatically merged into a single transaction. Transfers are excluded from this check because they have their own matching logic.
Clearing Pending Transactions
When a pending transaction you entered finally clears at the bank, EnvelopeBudget matches it to the cleared import by account, amount, and date, then marks it cleared.
Find the Missing Half with the F Key
Sometimes a transfer is imported as two separate transactions and isn't auto-linked — maybe the dates are further apart, or the amounts don't line up perfectly. That's where the Find Matching Transfer tool comes in.
Highlight any transaction on the Transactions page and press F. EnvelopeBudget searches your budget for a transaction that could be its counterpart:
- Opposite amount (your selected transaction's amount with the sign flipped)
- In a different account from the selected transaction
- Within a configurable date window (7 days by default)
- Not already linked as a transfer and not an allocation
A modal lists the potential matches — each showing account, date, payee, amount, memo, and whether it's pending or imported. Select the matching transaction and click Link as Transfer, and both become a linked transfer pair. If a shadow transaction is involved, the shadow is replaced with the real imported transaction.
Matching Tips
- The date window defaults to 7 days, which covers typical bank settlement delays
- Only transactions in different accounts are shown — EnvelopeBudget never matches two transactions in the same account as a transfer
- If your match isn't found, check whether it's already linked, or widen the date range
- You can also select two transactions and press T to link them directly as a transfer pair
Transfers Keep Your Budget Honest
The whole point of treating transfers as two linked transactions is accuracy. Your account balances reflect reality, your envelopes aren't distorted by money that never actually left your budget, and when your bank reports both sides, EnvelopeBudget connects them for you.
