How to Add EnvelopeBudget to Your Mac Dock
Turn EnvelopeBudget into a Mac web app so your budget is always one click away from the Dock.
You do not need to hunt through bookmarks every time you want to check your budget. If you use a Mac, Safari can turn EnvelopeBudget into a web app with its own icon in your Dock.
Once it is set up, EnvelopeBudget opens in a separate window and feels much like any other Mac app. Your budget is still the same secure EnvelopeBudget account, and you use the same username and password.
Add EnvelopeBudget to your Dock with Safari
This is the easiest option on a Mac running macOS Sonoma 14 or later.
- Open Safari on your Mac.
- Go to EnvelopeBudget.com.
- Log in to your EnvelopeBudget account. Signing in first makes it more likely that the new web app will open with your account already signed in.
- In the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose File > Add to Dock.
- Leave the name as EnvelopeBudget, or change it if you prefer.
- Click Add.
That is it. The EnvelopeBudget icon will appear in your Dock. Click it whenever you want to open your budget.
Safari also adds the web app to your Mac's Applications folder and to Spotlight. If you remove the icon from your Dock later, you can open Finder, select Applications, find EnvelopeBudget, and drag it back to the Dock.
What happens after you add it?
The Dock version opens EnvelopeBudget in its own simplified window instead of placing it in a normal Safari tab. It still uses EnvelopeBudget.com, so there is nothing new to install from an unknown source and no separate account to create.
Your username and password stay the same. Apple notes that, in most cases, a website you are already signed into in Safari will also be signed in when you first open its web app. If EnvelopeBudget asks you to log in again, simply use your regular account credentials.
If you do not see "Add to Dock"
First, make sure you are using Safari rather than Chrome, Firefox, or another browser. The File > Add to Dock command is a Safari feature.
The feature requires macOS Sonoma 14 or newer. To see which version your Mac is running:
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Look for the macOS name and version number.
If your Mac supports a newer version, open System Settings > General > Software Update to check for updates.
Shortcut option for an older Mac
If your Mac cannot update to macOS Sonoma, you can still create a website shortcut:
- Open EnvelopeBudget.com in Safari.
- Click and hold the website address in Safari's address bar.
- Drag the address to your desktop. Your Mac will create a small internet shortcut.
- Double-click that shortcut whenever you want to open EnvelopeBudget.
You can also drag the shortcut into the right side of the Dock, near the Trash. Older versions of macOS keep website shortcuts on that side of the Dock rather than beside regular applications.
Remove the EnvelopeBudget web app
If you no longer want the web app:
- Quit EnvelopeBudget if it is open.
- Open Finder and select Applications.
- Drag EnvelopeBudget to the Trash.
Removing the Mac web app does not delete your EnvelopeBudget account or budget data. You can continue signing in through any web browser.
